Oddworld Chronology & Timeline of Media

If you haven’t already, go and buy this game. Oddworld got a tough run of it and deserves a future. Also, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is a phenomenal game within a phenomenal series. Oddworld was created by Lorne Lanning, who was effectively nobody in the industry until his first major effort (lovingly remade in the aforementioned game) came one of the defining and most cherished games of the 90s.

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
(1997, PlayStation/Microsoft Windows)

Oddworld Adventures
(1998, Shortened, hand-held port of Abe’s Oddysee, GameBoy)

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty
(2014, Glorious HD remake of Abe’s Oddysee, Microsoft Windows/Playstation 4/Xbox One/Playstation 3/Wii U/PlayStation Vita)

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, Alf’s Escape
(2014, DLC campaign for New ‘n’ Tasty, adding a little more backstory to Abe’s right-hand: Alf, Microsoft Windows/Playstation 4/Xbox One/Playstation 3/Wii U/PlayStation Vita)

If the Press Release is to be believed, Oddworld: Soulstorm is going to take a darker route than it’s original Exodus, and perhaps set the benchmark for Oddworld’s future.

Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus
(1998, PlayStation/Microsoft Windows)

Oddworld Adventures II
(1999, Shortened hand-held port of Abe’s Exoddus, GameBoy Color)

Oddworld: Soulstorm
(2017, Re-telling/remake of Abe’s Exodus, Microsoft Windows/Playstation 4/Xbox One/Playstation 3/Wii U/PlayStation Vita)

NB: Generally people agree that Oddworld is played by order of release however, according to Oddworld Wikia, it is speculated (without citation) that Stranger’s Wrath takes place over the course of seven days, a longer time frame than the almost all of Abe’s adventures put together. Given the irrelevant nature of Stranger’s Wrath in Abe’s story arc (there is but two references to Abe’s timeline in the whole game, which admittedly, if one is a reference, places it after Munch’s Oddysee), I personally prefer this order, finishing the quintology with Munch’s Oddysee for a more rounded ending.

Stranger’s Wrath was one of those games that hit well with critics but flopped on sales. This was due to a dispute with publisher EA that lead them to hardly advertise it. As well as that, the ill-advised move to Xbox exclusivity due to a dispute with Sony lead to this being the only original Oddworld game we’ve seen in the last 15 years.

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath
(2005, The game that EA Games tried to bury, thus killing off the Oddworld series for 10 years, Xbox, HD: Microsoft Windows/PlayStation 3/Wii U/PlayStation Vita/Android/iOS)

Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee
(2001, Xbox/Microsoft Windows, HD: Microsoft Windows/PlayStation 3/PlayStation Vita/OS X/iOS/Android)

Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee
(2003, GameBoy Advance)
